Lunada Bay
Lush Lunada Bay is a gorgeous neighborhood in Palos Verdes Estates known for commanding great bluff top views of the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island on the peninsula. Residents here enjoy the peace and quiet due to the somewhat isolated area in which they live, and can often be seen walking along the beautiful Paseo Del Mar and Rocky Point to enjoy the ocean views and most importantly, the incredible sunsets. Here stunning cliffs tower over local’s favorite surf spots in Lunada Bay from PV Cove to Shipwreck at the point.
Locally known as two different areas, Lunada Bay is composed of ‘Lower Lunada Bay’ and ‘Upper Lunada Bay or Margate.’ Both being equally tranquil areas, homes and condominiums in the Upper/Margate area range in style but tend to be Tuscan or Mediterranean with classic tile roofs. Meanwhile Lower Lunada Bay, south of Malaga Cove, homes often have verandas to capture ocean views, and range in style from Spanish, Mediterranean, and the original charming Ranch style homes.
Single-family homes here start at about $1,100,000 for approximately 1,650 sq. ft., yet the median price is about $1,850,000 on average. However, homes range as high as $14,000,000 on perhaps the city’s most famous street, Paseo Del Mar. Here you will find world-class homes along the Palos Verdes bluffs and awe-inspiring bluff locations like Resort Point and Rocky Point Road.
Due to early city planning, there are many parkland areas in Lunada Bay, but no real official parks. There is a green belt that runs in the middle along Palos Verdes Drive West, and drops you right at the charming Lunada Bay Plaza. One would never miss the plaza due to the beautiful fountain ‘La Fuente de Los Ninos’ dedicated to the children of the community. While the plaza is small, it includes a handful of diverse restaurants that locals enjoy like the St. Honore French Bakery, and P.V. Grill. There are also a other amenities that include the local-favorite Lunada Bay Market & Deli, along with a few other shops. While this is the local ‘hangout’ spot, those who live in Lunada Bay do so for the peace and quiet, not the local nightlife.
Outside of the relaxed luxury lifestyle, bay-dwellers do enjoy a ‘locals’ surf spot in Lunada Bay and Bluff Cove known as ‘Little Waikiki.’ The cove is large but a bit rocky; however, it’s a great surf spot when conditions are good. Nearby, is Christmas Tree Cove, well-known for scuba diving or snorkeling. This location is also a nice spot to check out the tide-pools at low tide.
Lunada Bay/Margate is a great area for growing families to live. Unique to most of PV is the accessibility of being walking distance to all three levels of schooling. Students in Lunada Bay attend Lunada Bay Elementary, Palos Verdes Intermediate School, and Palos Verdes High School while still having the option to choose Palos Verdes Peninsula High School.
