Public and Private South Bay Schools

There are a multitude of reasons for living in the South Bay like the beautiful beaches and the easy-going lifestyle. But another major attraction to our area for families is the fantastic public school system. Students in the South Bay have the opportunity to receive their education from some of the top schools in the nation being right here at home.

    Jump to a section:

    Manhattan Beach, CA
Manhattan Beach is home to some of the best public schools in the United States. Commonly referred to as MBUSD, the district includes five elementary schools, one middle school and one high school within its city limits. Collectively, these schools consistently maintain API scores in the top 1% in both the state and the nation. MBUSD has been ranked among the top three schools in the State and LA County for many years now, as well as number fourteen in the nation.

The boundaries for the five elementary schools are based on the different sections in the City of Manhattan Beach; meanwhile, all students in the district attend Manhattan Beach Middle School (MBMS) for grades six through eight, and then Mira Costa High School for grades nine through twelve. All the Manhattan Beach Unified Schools are award-winning, including Mira Costa holding both the National Blue Ribbon Award, a Gold Award from US News, and Newsweek ranked Mira Costa in the top 1% of schools nationally. Likewise, all of the elementary schools are award-winning California Distinguished Schools, for example, Robinson Elementary continually being a National Blue Ribbon Award recipient.

Known for the strong focus on technology, MBUSD is an Apple Distinguished School District. There is a 1 to 1 device program in grades 3-8, and high standards for classroom technology for teachers. The district, due to its private foundation MBEF, supports important education in music, drama, and the arts, as well as developed competitive STEM courses. MBEF also has one of the best sports athletics program in the state.

    Hermosa Beach, CA
Hermosa Beach City School District is made up of two different campuses, Hermosa Valley School and Hermosa View School. Hermosa Valley students attend 4th-8th grades. The 4th and 5th grade classrooms are on a shared campus with the middle school, grades 6th-8th, though they are on different schedules and are separate from one another. Hermosa View School is the second elementary school located in East Hermosa Beach that includes TK-3rd Grades. Though the award-winning schools are smaller in comparison to neighboring Manhattan Beach or Redondo Beach, they are still part of the California Distinguished School and maintain API scores over 900 points.

Hermosa Beach does not have its own high school, so the students may choose which local high school they attend. They have the choice of attending either Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach or Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach. Families are allowed to send each student in their family to different schools for the most suitable programs for the individual child’s needs if they like.
