First offering: The Michell Residence, Joseph O. Michell (1960). That vision came to life as an extraordinary example of mid-century modernism- informed not only by his studies at the USC School of Architecture, but also by an ethos of innovation and resourcefulness. A dramatic ceiling hung fireplace at the center of the open plan living room is one such example of the architect’s ingenuity; it was formed from a repurposed culvert pipe, made to float above a 360 degree hearth of terrazzo mixed with colorful local abalone shells.
